Well, we know we [We Make Movies] are pretty cool. Our weekly workshops, “How We Make Movies” podcast, filmmaking challenges, film screenings, and … ever-expanding impression on the indie filmmaking world have made us the coolest film collective in Los Angeles. We do, however, have some friends in L.A. who are doing some pretty cool things themselves. New Film Makers Los Angeles (NFMLA) is a a non-profit organization that presents innovative works by emerging filmmakers on a monthly basis. These monthly screenings provide a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and connect with industry professionals for insight on distribution, production, acquisition and representation.
The series began over ten years ago in New York, and continues to debut groundbreaking new films here in L.A., as well as launch the careers of promising filmmakers. Each month, NFMLA hosts red carpet screenings of documentary, short and feature films that have been submitted from all over the world, followed by a Q&A with each film’s director, and after party for the audience and filmmakers to mingle. The group just recently, officially announced their move from the Sunset Gower Studios to the AT&T Center in Downtown Los Angeles. The new, 500 seat theater space, boasts features such as complimentary parking for all guests, and a new, upgraded cinema lounge reception space.
In other auspicious news for the group, they just made the top 50 festivals worth the entry fee list by other friends, MovieMaker Magazine. To check out the list, click here. Something of particular interest to our local WMM members, is NFMLA’s On Location Program, a community outreach multimedia program that celebrates and enlists LA’s remarkable pool of filmmakers. NFMLA partnered with the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board and LA Weekly to encourage filmmakers to create L.A.-centric shorts that serve as Ambassadors of L.A. The event for this contest will be held in the Fall of 2013.
More immediately pertinent? May 11th will mark the first screening in the new AT&T venue and NFMLA is graciously offering WMM members TEN all-night access pass giveaways to the occasion. Anyone who tweets about #NFMLA’s May 11, 2013 DEBUT event in DTLA at the AT&T Center (details at bit.ly/Zwno4w) will be eligible for one of ten all-night access passes. A random drawing will be held this Friday, May 3, 2013, so tweet today and don’t forget to include #NFMLA.
